REC 1404 - Mountaineering, Level I Credits: (1) Typically Taught Summer Semester: 1st Blk Typically Taught Spring Semester: 1st Blk, 2nd Blk Course Fee: $100.00 Course Fee Purpose: This course has a fee attached. Course fees are established in order to benefit the students in this course and may, among other things, be used to cover the costs of equipment replacement and maintenance, consumable materials, licensure examinations, or to meet specific regulatory requirements. Examples of course fee expenditures for this course include climbing hardware, harnesses, helmets, crampons, ice axes, avalanche beacons, avalanche probes, collapsible shovels, tents, sleeping bags, packs, and first aid supplies. Description: This physical activity course introduces students to the basic skills required for mountaineering, including snow climbing and descending, ice climbing, ice axe use, basic avalanche hazard identification, and technical rope systems in these environments. Course offering dependent on weather and snow pack expectations and conditions. May be repeated twice and up to 3 credits.
