Physical Education Teaching and Coaching (Non-Licensure) (BS)

The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation offers an undergraduate degree in Physical Education Teaching and Coaching (Non-Licensure). The Physical Education Teaching Track is designed to prepare students to teach physical education in a K-12 school system. A teaching minor is to be selected in addition to the teaching major to prepare students to enter the Teacher Education program and to become licensed to teach in a K-12 school system. Physical Education Teaching Track students must meet all requirements for the Physical Education Teaching Track and those requirements needed for Teacher Licensure (27).

The Athletic Coaching and Leadership (Non-Licensure) emphasis is designed to prepare students for leadership, coaching, and administrative roles in youth sport organizations, K-12 athletics, collegiate athletics, and Olympic or national governing body programs. The program emphasizes applied learning, leadership development, and alignment with Utah’s growing sport ecosystem, including youth sport expansion, collegiate athletics, and Olympic/Paralympic initiatives. Students will complete coursework in sport coaching theory, leadership, administration, athlete development, and experiential learning through practicum and internship opportunities.

  • Program Prerequisite: Students selecting the Physical Education Teaching Track, must meet the Teacher Education admission and licensure requirements (see Teacher Education Department in this catalog). Students selecting the Athletic Coaching and Leadership (Non-Licensure) emphasis must meet university admission standards and program advisement requirements prior to declaring the major.
  • Minor: Physical Education Teaching Track requires a teaching minor. A minor is not required for the Bachelor of Applied Studies in Athletic Coaching and Leadership (Non-Licensure) Grade Requirements: A combined GPA of 3.0 is required for all courses used toward the major. No grade lower than a “C” is acceptable.
  • Credit Hour Requirements: Physical Education Teaching Track-Total minimum credit hours required in the Major (36). Any Physical Education Professional course older than 8 years will not be accepted toward degree requirements. Total minimum credit hours for Athletic Coaching and Leadership required in the major: (93). Any program coursework older than eight (8) years will not be accepted toward degree requirements

Advisement

All Physical Education Teaching and Coaching (Non-Licensure) students are encouraged to meet with a faculty mentor or the department academic advisor each semester for course and program advisement. Admission Requirements

Students must meet with the Academic Advisor to declare the PEP or Athletic Coaching and Leadership major. In addition, students applying for the PE Teaching emphasis must also meet the Teacher Education admission and licensure requirements (see Teacher Education Department in this catalog). Students will not be allowed to register for PEP 3520, PEP 3520L, PEP 3630, PEP 3660, PEP 4700, PEP 4710, PEP 4860C, PEP 4830, or PEP 4990 until admission requirements have been met.

Admission to the program requires:

  1. Declared major in Physical Education and Coaching.
  2. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.
  3. Students may transfer a maximum of 12 physical education professional course credits from another institution per the Physical Education Program Director approval. Transfer students may apply up to 18 approved coaching or sport leadership professional course credits from another institution, subject to approval by the Program Director.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students in the Physical Education Teaching emphasis:

  • Know and apply discipline-specific scientific and theoretical concepts critical to the development of physically educated individuals.
  • Are physically educated individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate competent movement performance and health-enhancing fitness as delineated in the SHAPE K-12 Standards.
  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning experiences aligned with local, state, and national standards to address the diverse needs of all students.
  • Use effective communication and pedagogical skills and strategies to enhance student engagement and learning.
  • Utilize assessments and reflection to foster student learning and inform instructional decisions.
  • Practice dispositions essential to becoming effective professionals.

Additional learning outcomes for students completing the Athletic Coaching and Leadership emphasis:

  • Apply evidence-based coaching methods, leadership strategies, and athlete development principles to support performance, well-being, and long-term athletic growth in youth, scholastic, collegiate, and community sport settings.
  • Design and implement season plans, practice sessions, and instructional progressions that incorporate motor learning, skill acquisition, and age-appropriate training methodologies.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, motivational strategies, and relationship-building skills with athletes, parents, administrators, and support staff.
  • Utilize assessment tools, performance data, and reflective practice to evaluate athlete progress and inform coaching decisions.
  • Explain and apply ethical coaching practices, safety standards, and risk management principles relevant to sport programs.
  • Demonstrate competencies in team management, program organization, and administrative responsibilities including budgeting, scheduling, compliance, and event coordination.
  • Integrate knowledge of sport governance systems, including state associations, governing bodies, and Olympic development pathways, to support athlete opportunities and program alignment.
  • Demonstrate readiness for national coaching and sport-administration credentials, including the Registered Athletic Administrator credential where applicable.
  • Apply Coaching Pedagogy by designing and leading effective practices and competitions.
  • Demonstrate Leadership & Administration in managing programs, budgets, fundraising, and compliance with NFHS/UHSAA.
  • Ensure Athlete Safety & Well-Being through knowledge of injury prevention, concussion management, and CPR/AED/First Aid.
  • Integrate Ethical & Inclusive Practices to foster equitable, positive team environments.

Communicate & Lead Effectively with athletes, parents, administrators, and governing bodies. Students will master these outcomes through applied coursework, field placements, certification pathways, and direct collaboration with Weber State Athletics, as well as the Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
