Advanced Substance Use Disorder Counselor Minor

- Grade Requirements: A grade of “C” or better is required in all courses used to complete the Advanced Substance Use Disorder minor (a grade of “C-” is not acceptable). An overall GPA for the Advanced Substance Use Disorder minor courses of 2.50 or higher is required. Also refer to the general grade requirements for graduation Degree Requirements.
- Advanced Substance Use Disorder Minor Sunset Policy: Students declaring an Advanced Substance Use Disorder minor in a given catalog year can apply previously completed courses towards their requirements (see Course Grade Policy) as long as the courses were taken no longer than 10 years prior to the date of declaration.
- Advanced Substance Use Disorder Minor Transfer Credit Policy: A course taken at another institution may be applied to meet Advanced Substance Use Disorder minor credits if: a) there is an official articulation agreement in place between programs in the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE); or b) the course is at the same credit level, the number of credit hours is the same for the course being substituted, and content is determined to be equivalent by the Department of Social Work and Gerontology appeals and waivers committee. Course credits must be transferred to Weber State University. The Advanced Substance Use Disorder minor grade requirements and sunset policy apply to transfer credits.
- Credit Hour Requirements: Minimum of 32 credit hours.

Program Learning Outcomes
Students who complete the Advanced Substance Use Disorder minor will:
- Describe and discuss theories related to drug use, substance abuse, and addiction.
- Identify behaviors related to problematic drug use, substance abuse, and addiction.
- Identify evidence-based strategies for the prevention of problematic drug use and the treatment of addictive behavior.
- Demonstrate competency in advanced levels of counseling people who use drugs by engaging, assessing, intervening, and evaluating individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations.
- Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior in working with people who use drugs, their families, their communities, and related organizations.
- Engage in critical analysis of local, national, international, and organizational policies related to drugs and intervention in problematic drug use.
Advisement
- After declaring Advanced Substance Use Disorder as a minor, students should contact the department office to schedule their first advising appointment with the Department Advisor. Students should meet with the Department Advisor each semester for course planning, and to discuss progress toward graduation and professional goals.

NOTE: Successful completion of the Advanced Substance Use Disorder minor meets the curriculum content requirements for the Advanced Substance Use Disorder Counselor (ASUDC) certificate in the state of Utah. Students wishing to earn the ASUDC should discuss the process with the Department Advisor.
