The Science Teaching Major leads to endorsements and licensure to teach secondary (grades 7-12) science content in Utah public schools.
- Program Prerequisite: Must meet the Teacher Education admission and licensure requirements (see Department of Teacher Education) to complete the program.
- Minor: Not required
- Grade Requirements: A grade of “C” or better in courses required for this major (a grade of “C-” is not acceptable).
- Credit Hour Requirements: A total of 120 credit hours are required for graduation; 49-59 are required in the core and emphasis of the major, in addition to the credits required by the Teacher Education program. A total of 40 upper division credit hours (in courses numbered 3000 and above) are required to fulfill University graduation requirements.
- Program Code:
Advisement
See the Center for Science & Mathematics Education (weber.edu/csme) for advising and program options.
Admission Requirements
Teaching majors must be admitted to the Teacher Education program to complete the major and earn teaching credentials.
Program Learning Outcomes
- General science integration: Students will synthesize ideas from multiple scientific fields, the nature of scientific knowledge, and scientific practice.
- Application of scientific knowledge: Students will develop in-depth knowledge in an emphasis area (biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics) and use it to analyze and interpret novel phenomena.
- Pedagogical content knowledge: Students will learn and apply theories of science learning that meet a wide array of student needs and settings.
- Science teaching methods: Students will create curriculum and assessments that match state science education standards.
- Demonstrated science teaching practice: Students will demonstrate effective instruction and assessment in a classroom setting.

Major Course Requirements
Science Teaching majors have coursework in three main categories. The “core” coursework provides a scientific foundation and the study of science learning. The “emphasis” coursework allows a student to focus study in a concentration that provides a teaching endorsement in that specific area (biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics). The “teaching practice” coursework is the application of all of this to classrooms. Science Teaching Core (27-30 credit hours)
The core coursework provides a foundation in science education. Students should consider which courses in the core will best align with their emphasis area (below). Biology Foundation
Choose one of the following: Physics Foundation
Choose one of the following: Support Coursework
Choose at least one of the following to support the emphasis area: Emphasis Areas
The Science Teaching major will have an emphasis in one core science discipline. Coursework from the Science Teaching Core can count towards the emphasis area. Select one of the following emphases: Biology Teaching Emphasis (24 credit hours beyond core)
Chemistry Teaching Emphasis (22-25 credit hours beyond core)
Earth Science Teaching Emphasis (28-29 credit hours beyond core)
Physics Teaching Emphasis (22 credit hours beyond core)
Teaching Practice and Licensure (33 credit hours)
Science Teaching majors must satisfy Teacher Education admission and licensure requirements (see Secondary Teacher Education Licensure) including support courses, Secondary Teacher Education Core, and Secondary Teacher Education Student Teaching. |
