This Post-Baccalaureate Certificate will provide students with advanced training in Spanish translation and interpretation and will help them meet the increasing regional, national, and international demand for certified Spanish translators and interpreters. Students will study the theory, ethics, and practice of English-Spanish-English translation and interpretation and will develop into multilingual, interculturally competent professionals prepared to serve Utah and the world.
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate is open to students who possess a BA or BS degree in any discipline, at least an advanced-mid level of proficiency in Spanish, and excellent command in English. Knowledge of a third language is desirable.
- Grade Requirements: Students must receive a grade of B or better in every course.
- Credit Hour Requirement: The program of study consists of 12 credit hours. This includes 9 credit hours of required courses and a minimum of 3 credit hours of electives.

Admission Requirements
Admission to the program requires a bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited institution (Spanish degree preferred).
Applicants must complete an online application. Criteria for acceptance into the program include:
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.25 in the major (preferred).
- Submission of writing sample (4-8 pages).
- Transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended.
- Two letters of recommendation from educational or professional references.
- Interview with the program director for an assessment language interview.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Spanish Translation and Interpretation, students will:
- Identify, explain, and critically discuss theoretical and practical approaches to translation and interpretation, both as academic disciplines and as professional activities.
- Develop and enhance the linguistic, cultural, and technical skills necessary to effectively produce high-quality translations and interpretations in various professional settings.
- Demonstrate a deep understanding of the intercultural dimension of translation and interpretation and the ethical implications and responsibilities of professional translators and interpreters.
- Critically analyze and evaluate diverse technological tools and resources to successfully apply them to the practice of translation and interpretation.
