SPAN 6740 - Advanced Principles of Translation Theory and Practice Credits: (3)

Description: This course studies the theoretical foundations and practices of translation over the past twenty centuries. The course examines the major ideas that have informed the practice of translation, as well as the notions of originality, authorship, and linguistic and cultural boundaries.

Description: This course provides an advanced focus on the techniques and skills needed for bilingual interpretation in the healthcare professional setting, including specialized medical interpreting sub-fields and their respective terminologies. The course studies the code of ethics and the standards of practice, as well as an overview and history of the interpreting industry and work of interpreters, certification, and the variety of consumers and modalities with which interpreters work.

Description: This is a graduate specialized course that offers advanced studies in selected topics, current developments or recent trends in the fields of Translation and Translation Studies.

Description: This course provides an advanced focus on the practice and evaluation of translation. Students will get hands‐on experience with translation strategies and techniques, different text types, diverse genres and topics, and post-editing procedures. Students will complete interlingual translation exercises workshopped in small groups and will develop quality control competencies through peer reviews.

Description: May be offered under any of the languages taught in the department. All Foreign Language HU2600 courses are taught in English and all texts are read in English translation in order to make some of the literature we normally would teach in a foreign language accessible to all students. These courses may introduce students to specific literary periods, literary themes or some prominent authors in specific areas of the world where languages other than English are spoken.

Description: Required of all majors during their first year.This course provides guidance to help the student successfully navigate their academic career in WSU Department of World Languages & Cultures and its programs. It provides an overview of what it is like to study a second language, as well as an overview of the U.S. language industry and language careers. The course is also designed to help students develop a clearer focus on their educational and occupational goals, as well as creating a sense of belonging in our department, college, and community.

Description: (IM=Intermediate Mid) An introduction to linguistic structures and semantic elements. The course provides useful information and practice in the language, its structures and usage. The sub-disciplines of linguistics, other than phonetics and phonology (covered in 3220), will be studied. These may include lexical analysis, semantics, morphology, syntax, linguistic change and dialectal variation.

Description: In order to provide an interdisciplinary introduction to Latin America, this course presents the region’s history, its peoples, their culture and their political and natural environments. Other content to be discussed includes issues of migration, US Latinos and the region’s relationship with the US.

Description: A survey of global cinema movements and film aesthetics. Analysis of films within the context of a variety of cultures and diverse cinematic traditions of the word.

Description: Introduction to basic techniques and skills needed for bilingual interpretation in a variety of professional settings. The course includes an overview and history of the interpreting industry and work of interpreters, certification and licensure, and the variety of consumers and modalities with which interpreters work. Ethical decision-making models and the Code of Ethics for interpreters are explored.

It uses the standards for foreign language learning as the organizing principle for instructional methods; students design classroom lessons, projects and assessments based upon standards. FL 4500 is designed for students who are working toward a foreign language teaching degree or for teachers not desiring post-graduate credit. WLC 6500 is designed for teachers who are seeking to recertify or to become endorsed at the graduate level.
