PEP 2700 SS - Sociohistorical Aspects of Sport Credits: (3) Typically Taught Summer Semester: Online Typically Taught Fall Semester: Online Typically Taught Spring Semester: Online This course examines the sociological and historical aspects of sport in American society with the purpose of gaining an understanding of how race, class, gender, ethnicity, politics, and religion can bind Americans in a community of shared values and aspirations. Students will explore the unifying power of sport, as well as how sport serves to reproduce many inequalities present in the larger society. Gaining an understanding of how these issues, and others, interplay with sport is critical for those aspiring to become successful sport coaches, as well as for those who simply wish to gain an understanding of the complex relationship between sport and society (e.g., parents, fans, and sport participants).
