Description: This course focuses on the visual art and culture, architecture, and critical debates from 1850 to the 1960s. It explores the continuous evolution of Modernism, its roots, and dissemination across diverse global contexts. Students will explore a range of -isms-spanning Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United States-and consider how each region contributed to and reshaped Modernism. Emphasis will be placed on the challenges facing Modernism with attention to the political, social, and intellectual histories that shaped these transformations. Cross-cultural influences and exchanges will frame our study of how artists around the world redefined Modernist practices to reflect their unique perspectives.
Pre-requisite(s): ARTH 1090  or ARTH 1100  or ARTH 2050  or ANTH 1000  or ENGL 2010  or ENGL 2015  or HIST 1500  or HIST 1510  or with instructor consent.
